We close our Summer Festival with a concert featuring some of the most well-known, memorable works of the classical repertoire.
Good friend of the festival, the ‘virtuoso of the arts’ Matthew Sharp joins the orchestra for one of Elgar’s best-loved works, his wistful, emotive Cello Concerto, written in the aftermath of the Great War. The concert also features Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony, which, during its two movements, offers us a “complete, essential, and mysterious symphonic experience” (Tom Service, The Guardian). Book-ending these celebrated works are a selection of Dvořák’s lively, joyous Slavonic Dances, full of national character and guaranteed to lift the audience at the start of the concert, then send them home exhilarated.
