The Evening Concert on Friday 22 June features pianist Viv McLean, violinists Matthew Truscott and Jan Peter Schmolck, and soprano Claire Surman, alongside the Glossop Festival Orchestra conducted by Christopher George.
Following Handel’s energetic fifth Concerto Grosso, our pianist in residence Viv McLean joins the orchestra for Mozart’s A major piano concerto, one of the composer’s early Vienna concertos from 1782 containing, in the opening bars of its D major Andante, a musical epitaph to Mozart’s mentor Bach who had died earlier that year.
Soprano (and our Assistant Artistic Director) Claire Surman sings Richard Strauss’ Morgen!, one of his best known songs – a celebration of love inspired by his wife – before two internationally renowned violinists – Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment leader Matthew Truscott and RTÉ Concert Orchestra leader Mia Cooper – take on Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, a vital, sublime example of a true Baroque concerto. Rounding off the concert is Mendelssohn’s Sinfonia No 10, written when the composer was just 14.
