Viola player Gemma Dunne appears at our 2022 Summer Festival, playing in the Piano and String Octet concert on Friday 17 June. We caught up with her to find out more!

Gemma Dunne, viola

What is your favourite piece of music?
That’s such a tricky question! If I had to choose it would probably be a Beethoven piano concerto. I couldn’t possibly decide between no 2 and 4 though!

A favourite memory from a previous Glossop Music Festival?
Playing Brandenburg 3.

I love sailing, and have my hands full looking after the animals at home, sheep, chickens, a dog and tortoises!

What, or who, inspired you to become a musician?
Watching Young Musician of the Year as a child. And I had Ashkenazy tapes of Chopin piano music which I loved listening to.

What are you most looking forward to at this year’s festival?
Seeing friends!

Your career highlight so far (not just GMF!)?
Touring has to be the highlight, we’re so lucky to be able to see so many countries with our jobs. Japan is probably my favourite.

Which orchestras or ensembles have you played with?
I currently have a 50 percent job in The Hallé , which then enables me to freelance with many different orchestras across the country, as well playing chamber music.

Funniest / most embarrassing moment in music?!
Not for public consumption!  Couldn’t possibly share that!
