Ravel Pavane pour une infante défunte

Mendelssohn Italian symphony

For our closing concert, we welcome Glossop Festival Orchestra for a concert of classical masterpieces directed by violin virtuoso Katie Stillman. Created in Paris in 1919, Fauré’s Masque et Bergamasque was premiered at the Opéra-comique to great acclaim. Composer Jessie Montgomery describes her piece Starburst as “This brief one-movement work for string orchestra is a play on imagery of rapidly changing musical colors" depicting the rapid formation of large numbers of new stars in a galaxy. The orchestra then perform Mozart’s popular Sinfonia Concertante alongside our magnificent quartet of wind soloists. Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte was originally written for solo piano and orchestrated by the composer in 1910. The concert concludes with Mendelssohn’s 'Italian' Symphony which was written to capture the sights and sounds of Italy. Premiering in London on March 13, 1833, the final movement is one of the most dramatic pieces of music ever written by the composer, using Neapolitan dance rhythms.
