Introducing Mike Baker!

Introducing Mike Baker! One of the leading classical guitarists in the UK and one quarter of the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet. Don’t miss Mike and the rest of the quartet on Friday 19 April 2024 at St James’ Church in Glossop!

Mike Baker began playing the guitar at the age of 9 and soon after was awarded a place at the prestigious Chetham's School of Music in Manchester. During his seven years at the school, he was taught by renowned tutors Craig Ogden and Gorden Crosskey, as well as participating in masterclasses given by visiting professional soloists.

After achieving the position of Head Boy in his final year, he continued his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music where he achieved his Bachelor of Music degree (BMus Hons) as well as the College’s professional performance diploma (PPRNCM), its highest award for performance. He was soon selected to be on the external engagements scheme and gave many solo recitals around the country and was the recipient of numerous awards.

It was during his time at the RNCM that Mike became a founder member of the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet, the ensemble with which he is most well-known.

Recognising the responsibility artists have to impart some of their knowledge and experience to future generations, Mike embraces every opportunity to be involved in education work. He currently teaches at the renowned Manchester Grammar School and, along with the AGQ, he regularly gives masterclasses to guitarists and chamber musicians, ranging from enthusiastic youngsters to aspiring professionals. His former association with Yehudi Menuhin’s scheme Live Music Now has also equipped him with experience and expertise in providing educational recitals and workshops to a wide range of audiences.
